Dextromethorphan exerts a central antitussive effect by inhibiting the medulla oblongata cough center. Dextromethorphan is well absorbed when taken orally, takes effect within 15 à 30 minutes, and the effect can be maintained for 3 à 6 heures. The concentration of the prototype drug in plasma is very low. Its main active metabolite, 3-methoxymorphane, is present in high plasma concentrations. It is mainly used for dry cough, for colds, acute or chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, pharyngitis, tuberculosis and other upper respiratory tract infections.
