Naphazoline (in the hydrochloride form) is the common name for 2-(1-naphthylmethyl)-2-imidazoline hydrochloride. It is a sympathomimetic agent with marked alpha adrenergic activity. It is a vasoconstrictorwith a rapid action in reducing swelling when applied to mucous membrane. It acts on alpha-receptors in thearterioles of the conjunctiva to produce constriction, resulting in decreased congestion.
It is used for the treatment of colds, rinita acuta si cronica, conjunctivită alergică, embolie alergică și inflamatorie a congestiei nazale. Utilizarea locală pe termen lung poate duce la reducerea fluxului sanguin în zona de medicație, ceea ce determină scăderea rezistenţei , și duce la suprainfecție. It can not be taken orally. Dropping excess liquid or high concentrations can cause poisoning. Care should be taken, especially in children. Infants, hipertensiune arterială, hyperthyroidism patients should take with caution, atrophic rhinitis patients are banned. The interval time of dropping , is preferably not less than 4 la 6 ore.
