Liothyronine is the most potent form of thyroid hormone. Chemically, it is nearly identical to triiodothyronine (T3). The thyroid hormones are essential to proper development and differentiation of all cells of the human body. T3 is a regulator of the oxidative metabolism of energy. When you take liothyronine sodium it will increase the uptake of nutrients into the mitochondria, which raises activity in the oxidative metabolic pathway. This causes everything to work harder within the organism and makes the body demand more fuel.
Liothyronine is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyreoïdie). Het vervangt of zorgt voor meer schildklierhormoon, which is normally made by the thyroid gland. Liothyronine is a man-made form of thyroid hormone.
Low thyroid hormone levels can occur naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation/medications or removed by surgery. Having enough thyroid hormone helps you stay healthy. For children, having enough thyroid hormone helps them grow and learn normally.
This medication is also used to treat other types of thyroid problems (zoals bepaalde soorten struma, schildklier kanker).
It can also be used to test for certain types of thyroid disease.This medication should not be used to treat infertility unless it is caused by low thyroid hormone levels.
